Clonmel Og 3-9

St Pats 0-04

A rock solid defensive performance provided the platform for a famous victory this afternoon for our hurlers over St. Pats at a very well attended Sports field in Clonmel.

Pats started the brighter but the teams were level at two points each at the first water break thanks to points from Niall O’ Conor and Dylan Murphy, and in no small part to Rhys Lonergan who made two brilliant saves when Pats were through on goal and seemed certain to score.

Upon the restart we started to find some rhythm and points from David Cagney and two frees by Niall O’ Connor without reply stretched our lead to three. Things got even better when Diarmuid Ryan goaled right at the death to stretch our advantage to six points. Half time 1.05 to 0.02

Niall O’ Connor and Sean Cagney pointed in the opening minutes of the second half and in the 38th minute, Rhys made another great save to keep Pats at bay. A point by Dylan Murphy in the 48th minute kept the gap at eight points at the final water break, and he followed this up with a brilliant finish to the top corner of the net when play restarted. Jayden Cagney was rewarded for his hard work with a fine score in the 55th minute and Diarmuid Ryan put the icing on the cake with his second goal in the final minute. Final score 3.09 to 0.04

As mentioned earlier, this victory was built on a tremendous defensive effort throughout the game, and it should be noted that we kept Pats scoreless between the 6th and 45th minutes. During this period, Rhys made three key saves that prevented the momentum from swinging St. Pats’ way, and he was a worthy winner of the Man of the Match accolade. There were many other standout performances and any of Niall O’ Connor, TJ Slattery or David Cagney would be worthy recipients also.

Congratulations to the management team of Sean Quirke, Michael Condon, Tommy Murphy, Jock O’ Connor and JP McGrath

A special thank you to all our supporters who turned up in great numbers and in full voice to cheer the team on. Great to see soo many of Juveniles kids/players present to witness it.
